General Problems and Fixes

2 NIC's Installed
This can cause a variety of errors from not being able to open the PPPoE client to connection problems. The PPPoE software will use the default NIC. The default NIC is determined by the first card listed in the registry or the lowest MAC Address. Try disabling the second NIC. (You need to restart to do this). If this still does not work uninstall the second NIC and cancel the hardware install on reboot. Users that have installed a NIC while also using the internal modem have hosed the entire software pack.

AppleTalk, DSL, and Printing

Problem: Member needs Appletalk set to Ethernet to make the connection, but also needs it set to the printer port in order to print using AppleTalk.
This is a limitation of the Mac OS AppleTalk driver and occurs when 2 NIC's are installed, one for the DSL, and one for the Ethernet based printer. Once the DSL connection is established AppleTalk can be changed to the desired port or completely inactivated with no interference to the DSL connection.

Autodial connectoid is missing in Dial-Up Networking
See the Tips page for information on this feature and how to create the connection

Cannot send email or upload via FTP
This problem typically occurs when the member is using a PPPoE enabled router.
Examples include the Linksys Cable/DSL router, and the MacSense router. (there are others)
The fix is to simply lower the MaxMTU setting from 1492 to 1454.
For Windows PC's see the Tips page to manually make this change.
For Mac's, the member must download and use a program called OT Advanced Tuner,
which is available here -> http://www.sustworks.com (user is on their own using this app).

Computer boots slowly since DSL installation
1 The computer may be searching for a DHCP server at bootup, and eventually times-out.
Hard code the appropriate IP and subnet into the TCP/IP settings of the NIC.
2 This is common with the USB based 4060 modem, as it downloads the drivers to the modem at every boot. This is normal and has no fix.

Computer locks up after connecting and opening a TCP/IP application
Check the IP Address of the Speedstream 3060 or the NIC. Specify one if there is not one already
(Use the appropriate NIC IP and Subnet mask for the modem they are using)

Computer locks up when disconnecting from the Internet
Cause: A program in memory is causing a conflict (DirectCD is known to do this)
Click Start - Run, and enter msconfig. Go to the Startup tab
Uncheck all un-necessary applications and reboot

Driver not loaded (from Speedstream Status icon in the Systray)
Cause: Adapters have lost the bindings
Remove and re-install the modem drivers

DSL transmitting but not receiving
Cause: VPI number may be wrong.
Verify that the DSL modem and the vendor are using the correct PVC.
May also be a bad DSLAM CAP4 or DMT card, shelf, or shelf controller card.

EnterNet 100 Hangs While Adding the Adapter to System
Check for anti-virus programs running, and disable them.
Remove the TCP/IP stack, reboot, and re-add TCP/IP stack for the PPPoE adapter.

EnterNet 100 listed as "Not Responding" under Close Programs
Open the Network Control Panel and remove TCP/IP for the NTS adapter and the other adapters.
This may cause the NTS PPPoE Adapter to be removed also, but that is fine.
Reinstall TCP/IP and then reinstall the NTS PPPoE adapter.
(Click on Add - Adapters - NTS, then highlight the adapter on the right).

Enternet 100 or 300 not working on multiple processor machines
Members need to be using WinPoet v2.0 or RASPPPoE if they have a multiple processor machine.
SMP support will be included in EnterNet 100 v1.34

EnterNet 100 shows only part of the dialog box
Cause: EnterNet 100 was corrupted during or after the installation
1 Search for and open enternet.ini
   Look for these two sections:
  • [Window Size]
    Rect=0332 0136 0637 0454
    icon=0 > max=0
  • [MainWindow Size]
    Rect=0010 0010 0517 0406
    icon=0 > max=0
    view=1342178048
Delete the value for Rect= for both of these sections
This will cause the software to reset them to the default values for that window the next time it is opened
2 If this does not fix it, remove EnterNet 100, disable all programs except Explorer and Systray, and re-install

IE5 Repair tool does not appear in Add/Remove Programs
1 Click Start - Run, enter "msinfo32" and click OK.
Click the Tools tab and Internet Explorer Repair Tool
<or>
2 Click Start - Run, enter "rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE5Maintenance"  (case sensitive)
Complete IE version info is available here

Internal 3060 Modem and NIC Conflict in Windows 98SE
Problem: Member has both an internal DSL modem and a NIC installed, and has no throughput.
Open Device Manager, remove the NIC driver and restart. When the wizard asks to find the drivers cancel through, (we are not installing the NIC driver at this time). Try to connect and check for throughput. If so, then member can't use the NIC. No known fix yet. The reason this needs to be done is that the NTS software is using the lowest Mac Address as an adapter even though it asks you which adapter to connect with.

Packet Loss
Check MaxMTU and RcvWindow settings, or apply a speed tweak to optimize these.
If packet loss still occurs, contact the ISP.

No Throughput

Windows:
Perform the first 2 solutions and check for throughput again. If these do not help, check items 3 and 4.
1 Disable any firewall software. (completely remove it from memory)
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close the browser.
  • Check the Systray icons and close everything running (except video card utilities).
  • Press Control-Alt-Delete and end task on everything but Explorer and Systray. Some firewalls and anti-virus apps refuse to end task and may lock up the machine in the process. In this case, run msconfig and look under the Startup tab. Uncheck everything except Systray and reboot.
2 Make sure that proxy settings are not enabled in the browser, and empty the cache:
  • For IE5.x, click Tools - Internet Options, click the Delete Files button, and click OK to the confirmation.
Click the Settings button, and set the cache size down to 10 MB
Click the Connections tab, then the LAN settings button. Uncheck all options.
Click OK twice to return to the browser window.
  • For Netscape 4.x and 6.x, Click Edit - Preferences - Advanced - Cache
Click the "Clear Disk Cache" button, and click OK to the confirmation.
Netscape usually has a low cache specified, such as 7680 KBytes, which is fine.
Click the Proxies category, the dot should be next to "Direct connection to the Internet".
Click OK once to return to the browser window.
3 Check for Host files:
  • Click Start - Find - Files or Folders
    Search for "hosts" (no extension)
  • You should find 2 files, hosts.sam and lmhosts.sam
These are sample host files and are ok to leave, any others must be deleted.
4 Check the 2 Winsock files:
Delete any winsocks except those listed below, and check file sizes.
Replace any missing or incorrect files.
  • Click Start - Find - Files or Folders
Search for "winsock.dll wsock32.dll" (space between and no quotes)
  • Windows 95:
    Winsock.dll is 42k and located in C:\Windows
    Wsock32.dll is 65k and located in C:\Windows\System
  • Windows 98/98se:
    Winsock.dll is 21k and located in C:\Windows
    Wsock32.dll is 40k and located in C:\Windows\System
  • Windows NT:
    Winsock.dll is 3k and located in C:\WinNT\System32
    Wsock32.dll is 21k and located in C:\WinNT\System32
  • Windows 2000:
    Winsock.dll is 3k and located in C:\WinNT\System32
    Wsock32.dll is 21k and located in C:\WinNT\System32
5 Remove and reinstall Comunications:
  • Remove all network components, except the NIC and Client for Microsoft Networks. Do not reboot.
  • Uncheck Communications in Add/Remove - Windows Setup, click Ok. Do not reboot.
  • Double-click Communications and check only Dial-up Networking, click OK. Do not reboot.
  • Check Network Control Panel for correct components, and reboot.
6 Remove and re-install the PPPoE software.
  • See the appropriate software page for instructions.
7 Remove and reinstall the Ethernet card drivers.

Mac:
1 Disable any firewall software. (completely remove it from memory)
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close the browser.
  • Press Apple + Option + Escape to force quit all programs (except Finder!)
This works like Control-Alt-Delete in Windows, except only one app at a time is displayed.
Finder will be the last app listed, and the only one if nothing else is running.
2 Make sure that proxy settings are not enabled in the browser, and empty the cache:
  • For IE5.x, click Edit - Preferences - Advanced, and click the Empty Now button.
Set the cache size down to 10 MB
Scroll down and click on Proxies, nothing should be checked.
Click OK to return to the browser window.
  • For Netscape 4.x, Click Edit - Preferences - Advanced - Cache
Click the "Clear Disk Cache Now" button, and click OK to the confirmation.
Netscape usually has a low cache specified, such as 7680 KBytes, which is fine.
Click the Proxies category, the dot should be next to "Direct connection to the Internet".
Click OK once to return to the browser window.
3 Trash the TCP/IP Preference file(s)
  • Click File - Find, and search for "tcp/ip preferences"
  • Delete all copies (unless they have multiple Internet providers)
  • Set up a fresh copy of TCP/IP preferences
  • Reconnect and check for throughput.

Slow Throughput

  • Disclaimer - Line quality as well as length will determine the users's speed, and these are factors beyond the ISP's control.

Windows:
1 Make sure that proxy settings are not enabled in the browser, and empty the cache:
2 Apply a speed tweak to optimize the registry settings.
This is a good one - http://www.speedguide.net/files/sguide_tweak_98_pppoe.zip   (for '98 only)
(unzip and right-click the .inf file, chose Install, and reboot)
For Windows NT and Windows 2000, apply the registry changes manually. (See the Tips page)
Windows Me is already optimized for high speed connections and does not require any tweaks.
Mac's generally don't need speed tweaks and really have no way to implement them either.
For Windows machines, check the Network Control Panel settings, as well as applying the tweak.
For Mac's check the TCP/IP Control Panel Settings or trash and rebuild them.
(search for the word "preferences" and trash all copies of TCP/IP Preferences, reboot and re-enter the settings)
3 In some cases, having the vendor re-provision the line will help. Keep in mind that Covad only guarantees 128kbps.
4 Overclocking the CPU, if done incorrectly, can cause a slowdown in throughput.
Turning down the PCI bus multiplier from 1/3 to 1/4 has fixed this. (user is on their own doing this)
5 Using a RJ-11 cable in a RJ-45 jack will also degrade throughput.
6 If the user is experiencing a sudden and major drop in throughput, contact the ISP for a line check.

  • Reconnect and check the throughput.

Stuffit Does Not Recognize Software Archive
Install Stuffit 5.0 from the EarthLink or MindSpring CD. You can also get Stuffit here.

Throughput stalls for a minute, then returns to normal
Cause #1 - IE or Netscape is looking for a proxy and not finding one.
This process will time-out on it's own after approximately a minute.
See the Slow Throughput section for instructions on disabling the proxy settings.
Cause #2 - Computer is looking for a DHCP server and not finding one.
  • Win9x: Hard code the appropriate IP and Subnet mask into the TCP/IP properties of the NIC.
Disable WINS and DNS. Add the router's IP address to the Installed Gateways.
You will find the IP's and Subnet on the modem pages.
  • Windows NT4: Go to Control Panel->Services. Find the DHCP Client and disable it.
Cause #3 - IE is not recognizing the DSL connection
Run the IE5 Repair Tool while the DSL is connected

Timeouts and trouble staying connected (win95a and win95b only)
Download the DUN1.3 Upgrade

.vxd errors when booting, after re-installing DUN
When booting the system the user gets errors about the following files not found:
vnetsup.vxd, vredir.vxd, dfs.vxd
May be caused by the files not being entered in the registry due to an incomplete or aborted installation of DUN.
Reinstalling DUN doesn't fix the problem.
1 Uninstall the PPPoE software.
2 Remove ALL network components, except for the NIC adapter and TCP/IP bound to it.
This includes Client for Microsoft Networks.
Click Ok to exit and click Ok again to the message stating the network is not complete.
Do not restart the computer at this time. If you do you run the chance of hosing the system completely.
3 Uninstall conmmunications and let it reboot now.
The .vxd errors will appear again when the system is booting up, but this will be the last time.
Reinstall DUN, verify that all network components are installed and reboot.
4 Reinstall the PPPoE software.
