Please note the following assumptions:
What You Need To Get Started:
1. A Ricochet modem and
Ricochet service from a Internet Service Provider.
2. Functional high-speed
(16550) serial port.
3. NT Workstation CD-ROM
4. Administrator system
access
Step 1: Installing the Ricochet Modem
This step will install the Ricochet modem into the list of available resources. It will be used by the Dial-Up Networking program later.
1. Open the Control Panel
Click on the button
Select Settings
Select Control Panel
2. Double-click the Modems
icon.
You should see a dialog box like the one below:
3. At this point, make sure
your Ricochet modem is turned-on and has a flashing green light. Click the Next
button.
4. All of the serial ports
installed under NT will be examined for attached modems. Once the process is
complete, you should see a dialog box similar to the one below, showing a newly
found Ricochet modem:
If you do not see a dialog box like the one above, check the following and repeat steps 1-4:
§
Make sure the Ricochet modem is connected correctly and it has
acquired the network (flashing green light).
§
Try another serial port if one is available.
§
If you are using 9-to-25 or 25-to-9 pin adapter, make sure it
supports hardware handshaking. (Most mouse adapters do not support this
feature.)
5. Click the Next
button.
6. After clicking next, you
may be prompted for an area code. If this is the case, enter the area
code of your current location and click the Next button.
Note: Although you must enter an area code to
complete the Ricochet installation, the Ricochet modem does not use this
information to complete a connection. However, this information may be needed
by other applications which use (other) modem resources on your computer.
7. Click the Finish
button. You should see a dialog box similar to the one below:
8. Click the Close
button and continue the installation with the next section
(Configuring Dial-Up Networking).
Step 2: Configuring Dial-Up Networking
This step will install the Dial-Up Networking program and configure it to use your Ricochet modem so you can access the Internet.
1. Double click the icon from your desktop. You should be see a
window similar to the one below:
2. Double-click the icon.
3. Depending on your
installation, you may see the following dialog box:
If this is the case, follow the instructions below, otherwise skip to step 4.
a.
Click the Install button
b.
The system will copy needed support files. (Make sure you have
the NT CD-ROM handy.)
c.
Continue the installation with step 4 below.
4. You should see a dialog
box similar to the one below:
Make sure Ricochet Wireless Modem is selected as illustrated above.
Click the OK button.
5. A dialog box similar to
the one below should appear:
Click the Configure button.
6. A Configure Port Usage
dialog should appear:
Click the Dial out only button.
(Note: Although the Ricochet modem is being setup for dialing-out only, it is possible to configure it for both incoming and outgoing calls. However, such a configuration is beyond the scope of this document and requires significant configuration changes. Therefore, we recommend clicking the 'Dial out only' button to ensure configuration success with this Application Note.)
Click the OK button.
7. The Remote Access Setup
dialog should reappear. After clicking the Network button, the follow
dialog should appear:
Ensure that only TCP/IP is checked as illustrated above.
Click the OK button.
8. The Remote Access Setup
dialog should reappear again. Click the Continue button.
9. Depending on your
installation, you may be asked to restart your computer. If this is the case,
follow the instructions below. Otherwise, click the Close button and
skip to step 10.
a.
Reboot your computer.
b.
Once the system comes back up, double-click the icon from your desktop.
c.
Double-click the icon.
d.
You may see a dialog stating that "The phonebook is
empty." If this is the case, click the OK button.
10. You should be presented
with a "New Phonebook Entry Wizard" dialog box similar to the one
below:
Change the phonebook entry from "Dial Ricochet" to "Dial the Internet."
Click the Next button.
11. You should see a dialog
box similar to the one below:
Ensure that only "I am calling the Internet" and "Send my plain text password. . ." settings checked as illustrated above.
Click the Next button.
12. Enter 3333 for
the phone number field and click the Next button.
13. Click the Finish
button. You should see the following dialog box:
14. Making sure Dial
Ricochet appears in the "Phonebook entry to dial" field, click
the More button, then select Edit entry and modem properties... from
the drop-down menu.
15. After clicking the
Server tab, you should see a "Edit Phonebook Entry" dialog box
similar to the one below:
Ensure your dialog box has the following settings:
§
Dial-up server type = PPP: Windows NT, Windows95 Plus, Internet
§
Network protocols = TCP/IP is checked (only)
§
Enable software compression is checked
§
Enable PPP LCP extensions is checked
When complete, your dialog should look like the one above.
16. Click the TCP/IP
Settings button. A PPP TCP/IP Settings dialog will appear. Make sure
the following settings are set:
§
Server assigned IP address is selected.
§
Specify name server addresses is selected and filled with the following
IP addresses:
Primary DNS: 207.217.126.81
Secondary DNS: 207.217.77.82
§
Use IP header compression is checked.
§
Use default gateway on remote network is checked.
Your dialog box should look like the one below:
Click the OK button.
17. Click the OK
button on the "Edit Phonebook" entry dialog.
18. After clicking the close
button, you have finished the Dial-Up Networking installation.
Move on to step 3 to test the newly created connection.
Step 3: Testing the Connection
Now that Dial-Up Networking has been installed and configured, we must test the connection before finalizing the installation. To activate the newly-created "Dial Ricochet" connection, follow the steps below:
1. Double-click the icon from your desktop.
2. Double-click the icon. You should see the following dialog:
3. Click the Dial
button. You should see a dialog box similar to the following:
Note: Your username and password are provided to you by your ISP when you purchase your Ricochet account.
4. After making sure your
modem is turned on, click the OK button. You should see the following
dialog :
5. In a few moments you
should connect to the Ricochet network and see the
following dialog:
This dialog verifies that you are indeed connected to the network. If you don't want to see this dialog each time you connect, check the Do not display this message again box.
6. Click the OK
button.
Step 4:Using Dial-Up Networking
This section will brief you on making an Internet connection and disconnecting from the network.
1. In the previous section,
you invoked the Dial-Up Networking application to complete a connection to the
Internet. You should still be connected. You can verify this by viewing the
modem icon in the taskbar.
As seen here: (Note the yellow phone.)
If you see a yellow phone in the taskbar, you are currently connected. (The phone will be greyed-out if you are disconnected.)
2. While connected, you can
bring up a Dial-Up Networking Monitor by double-clicking the modem icon. You
should see a dialog similar to the one below:
3. In addition to detailing
connection statistics, this window provides a method of disconnecting from the
Internet connection. To disconnect, click the Hang Up button (as shown
in the dialog above).
Note: You should hear a beep from Windows NT to
confirm the disconnection.
In addition, the modem icon should be greyed-out. As seen here:
4. Click the OK
button to dismiss the Dial-Up Networking Monitor window.
5. If you need to
re-establish a connection, right-click the modem icon in the taskbar and select
Dial Ricochet as illustrated below:
6. You should be presented
with the dial dialog similar to the one below:
7. Click the OK
button to complete the connection. You are connected as soon as you hear the
confirmation beep.
8. Congratulations, you
have completed the Ricochet installation for Windows
NT v4.0 Workstation!
