Network Settings
Since a NIC and Ethernet are not used with this modem, there is no method to ping the modem

If the modem drivers are properly installed, you will see the following icons on the taskbar:

  Indicates the modem has an active connection. The lights will blink when the modem is transmitting.

  Indicates the modem is not connected or configured properly.

If this shows disconnected and the user cannot re-connect via Enternet 100, then cold-boot the computer and check the USB cable from the computer to the modem, and the phone cord from the modem to the wall.
There is an LED on the back of this modem, next to the DSL port. This LED is lit if the modem is connected properly.

If user has this modem plugged into a USB hub, insure that no low-speed devices are sharing the hub.
Low-speed devices include keyboards, mice, and joysticks. These can interfere with the DSL connection.
It is preferable to connect the USB modem directly to the USB port on the computer.

Double-click the systray icon for details. Pressing Ctrl-Alt-A while this is open will provide advanced details such as VPI and VCI numbers, bytes sent/received, and error count.
If icon is not present in the systray, it can be turned on by going into Control Panel, double-clicking the SpeedStream Status icon, and checking the Show Icon on Taskbar option.
The Control Panel applet has the same functions as the systray icon.

Windows 98 Network Settings:
** The following assumes the computer is not participating on a network.
The user will need the following components in the Network Control Panel:
  • Client for Microsoft Networks
  • Dial-up Adapter (optional but good backup to have)
  • ENI 4060 SpeedStream (02) RFC 1483 Ethernet PVC Client
  • Network TeleSystems PPPoE Adapter (NTSPPP3)
  • TCP/IP -> Dial-up Adapter
  • TCP/IP -> ENI 4060 SpeedStream (02) RFC 1483 Ethernet PVC Client
  • TCP/IP -> Network TeleSystems PPPoE Adapter (NTSPPP3)
     (the customer may have VPN support as well although it is not required)

VPN by default adds the NetBEUI protocol and binds it to all the adapters. If the computer is not on a network, then all instances of NetBEUI can be removed. If the computer is on a network and using NetBEUI, then leave NetBEUI -> Ethernet Card in place and just remove the others.

The TCP/IP settings for the SpeedStream 4060 and the NTS PPPoE Adapter are normally set the same way we set TCP/IP for the Dial-up Adapter:
  • Obtain an IP address automatically
  • Disable WINS resolution
  • Installed gateways is blank
  • Disable DNS

Removing the USB Modem driver
If CleanSweep is installed, the user may need to disable and/or uninstall it before continuing.
The user will need the Windows CD for both removing and re-installing these drivers.
1 Disconnect the modem's USB connector from the PC
2 Open the Network Control Panel
3 Highlight the ENI 4060 SpeedStream (02) RFC 1483 Ethernet PVC Client

9 Restart the computer when prompted.

The Beta drivers for the SpeedStream 4060 modem under Windows Me may be found here:

Earthlink/Mindspring does not support this yet, as the drivers are beta.
