Microsoft® Windows CE is an operating system that is used on many handheld computing devices. The setup described below will allow you to create a connection to the Ricochet wireless network using this operating system.
What You Need To Get Started:
1. A Ricochet modem and
Ricochet service from an Internet Service .
2. A data cable to connect
your Ricochet modem to your Microsoft Windows CE device. Many WinCE
devices have proprietary serial port connectors. In these cases, you will
need a serial cable for your WinCE device, a gender changer, a null modem adapter that supports "full-handshake".
(Not all do, APC's #5282 does) and the Ricochet serial cable. Gender
changers and null modem adapters are available at Radio Shack, Dreampages and other locations. Detailed explanation of
null modem adapters.
3. A Microsoft Windows CE
2.0 Handheld PC (H/PC).
How to Create and Configure a New Connection
1. Tap the Start
button, tap Programs, tap Communication, then tap Remote
Networking.
2. Double-tap Make New
Connection.
3. Type in Ricochet
in the Type a name for the connection box, select Dial-Up Connection,
and then tap Next.
4. Make sure Hayes
Compatible on COM1 is the selected modem.
5. Tap the Configure
button and select the Port Settings tab. Make sure that none of the 3
boxes on this screen are checked. In the Connection Preferences section,
use the following settings:

Baud Rate: 115200
§
Data Bits: 8
§
Parity: None
§
Stop Bits: 1
§
Flow Control: Hardware
6. Tap the Call Options
tab. Check the box next to Cancel the call if not connected within 120 seconds.
Uncheck Wait for Dial Tone before Dialing. There should not be anything
in the Extra Settings box.
7. Tap the OK button
in the upper right corner of the screen.
8. Tap the TCP/IP
Settings button. On the General tab, the settings should be as
follows:

Server-assigned IP address: (checked)
§
Use Slip: (unchecked)
§
Use software compression: (unchecked)
§
Use IP_header compression: (unchecked)
9. Tap the Name Servers
tab, the settings should be as follows:
§
Server-assigned addresses: (unchecked)
§
Primary DNS: 207.217.126.81
§
Secondary DNS: 207.217.77.82
§
Primary WINS: 0.0.0.0
§
Secondary WINS: 0.0.0.0
10. Tap OK in the
upper right corner of the screen.
11. Tap Next. Remove
any entries you may have in the Country and Area fields, and
leave unchecked Force long distance and Force local check boxes.
For Telephone number enter 3333.
12. Tap Finish. Once
the connection is created, your new Ricochet icon appears in the Remote
Networking folder.
13. Double-tap the Ricochet
icon, then tap Dial Properties. Tap the Dialing Patterns button
and enter the following:

For Local calls dial: g
§
For Long Distance calls dial: g
§
For International calls dial: g
Note: Selecting "g" allows you to dial just the number, without the area and country code.
14. Tap OK in the
upper right corner of the Dialing Patterns window.
15. Back in the Dialing
Properties window, select Tone for Dial using, and make sure
that Disable call waiting is unchecked. The local area code and The
local country code entries are optional.
16. Tap OK in the
upper right corner of the Dialing Properties window.
17. Enter your username and
password provided to you from your ISP in the boxes for these.
18. Tap Connect and a
status window should come up. When the Status: says Connected,
you have established your PPP connection through the Ricochet network to the
Internet.
How to Connect to Your PPP Account
1. Tap the Start button,
tap Programs, and then tap Communications.
2. Tap Remote Networking,
and then double-tap the connection's icon (Ricochet) which you created in Step
3 in the above section (How to Create and Configure a New Connection).
3. In the Connect To dialog
box, enter the appropriate information, and then tap Connect.
Note: The Phone number displayed should have "T" at the
beginning. This is normal and indicates Tone dialing.
4. When the Status:
changes to Connected, you have established your PPP connection with
Ricochet.
