Network Settings
NIC IP:  10.0.0.2 Subnet Mask:  255.0.0.0 Modem IP:  none

***This modem does not have an internal IP. You'll be able to ping the NIC but not the modem.
It is not necessary to specify an IP in the TCP/IP settings unless you need to ping the NIC, or the user is receiving TAP errors. If you do specify the IP, you should use the above settings for this modem. Enter these settings in the TCP/IP properties of the Ethernet Adapter connected to the DSL modem. Do not change TCP/IP properties of any other adapters.

Windows (EnterNet 100):
The TCP/IP settings for both the NIC and the NTS PPPoE Adapter are normally set the same way we set up TCP/IP for the Dial-up Adapter:
  • Obtain an IP address automatically
  • Disable WINS resolution
  • Installed gateways is blank
  • Disable DNS

The Windows 95/98 Network Control Panel should have the following components:
  • Client for Microsoft Networks (or Microsoft Family Logon, but not both)
  • Dial-up Adapter (optional but good backup to have)
  • Ethernet Adapter, such as 3Com Etherlink XL PCI (3C900b-TPO), or Linksys LNE 100 PCI Network Interface Card
  • Network TeleSystems PPPoE Adapter (NTSPPP3)
  • TCP/IP -> Dial-up Adapter
  • TCP/IP -> Ethernet Adapter
  • TCP/IP -> Network TeleSystems PPPoE Adapter (NTSPPP3)
     The user may have VPN support as well although it is not required

VPN by default adds the NetBEUI protocol and binds it to all the adapters. If the computer is not on a network, then all instances of NetBEUI can be removed. If the computer is on a network and using NetBEUI, then leave NetBEUI -> Ethernet Card in place and just remove the others. Same is true for IPX/SPX protocol if present.

Mac (EnterNet 100):
TCP/IP Control Panel configuration:
  • Connect via: EnterNet
  • Configure: Using PPP Server
  • Name server addr.:
    207.217.126.81 for EarthLink or 207.69.188.185 for MindSpring
    207.217.77.82 for EarthLink or 207.69.188.186 for MindSpring
  • Additional Search Domains: earthlink.net or mindspring.com
  • Click the Options button in the lower right and insure:
    "Make TCP/IP Active" is checked
    "Load only when needed" in not checked
(if the Options button is not visible, go to the menu at the top of the screen and select Edit - User Mode, select the Advanced option and click OK).

If you need to ping the NIC and/or modem on a Mac:
Change TCP/IP from "Connect via Enternet" to "Connect via Ethernet" and change "Configure Using PPP Server" to "Configure Manually". Enter the appropriate IP, then close and save the changes. Run the OT Tool directly from the MindSpring CD. (located in the Other Software or Software Depot folder) In the lower right corner, enter the NIC or router's IP address and click on the "Ping" button. See Picture
OT Tool is also available here.
